QE2 World Charity Homes Turned Over to Beneficiaries

Singa Ship Management Philippines officers and staff led the turn-over of 24 housing units to deserving families at the GK Salas Queen Elizabeth 2 Village in Paranaque City last August 24, 2008. The houses were donated by QE2 World Charities but the construction was undertaken by Gawad Kalinga in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Parañaque South.

  Leading the turn-over of the symbolic keys to the beneficiaries were Singa Ship President Rene Aguirre and EVP Norma David.  They were assisted by Iryl Mercado-Umali, Crewing Coordinator of QE2 and Jerry Cruz who is scheduled to join QE2 on August 26.

  Seafarers Fun Run - "Go Marino Go!  Healthy Body, Healthy Mind"  

In celebration of National Maritime Week last Sep. 20 to 28, 2008, the Joint Manning Group (JMG) composed of the five leading manning-related groups (FAME, PAMAS-INTERMAP, PJMCC & FSA) organized a Seafarers’ Fun Run exclusively for the maritime industry with a theme “Go Marino go! Healthy Body, Healthy Mind last Sept. 21,2008. It  was held at the IMAX Open Parking Area of SM Mall of Asia (MOA),  Pasay, City.

As early as 5:00 a.m. participants gathered  at the open  parking space. The race started at 6:00 a.m.  Some of SSMPI staff and trainees joined the Fun  Run and  everybody had a great time.

This fun run was organized for all industry stakeholders, maritime students/cadets, employees, seafarers and their families to give them an opportunity to run together and to increase physical fitness awareness and at the same time develop the sense of solidarity and unity as members of the maritime sector.

  3 Singa Ship Maidens Walk Down the Aisle in 2008  

2008 is wedding year for Singa Ship girls as three of them got married one after another.

First to tie the knot is Crewing Coordinator Preciosa Joy (PJ) Borromeo who exchanged vows with Antonio Vincent Oben, a crew member from Crown Princess.  The wedding was held at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Legazpi City last May 30, 2008.  PJ and Antonio are childhood friends and both from Legazpi City.

Next is Irene Sandoval from the Accounting Department who got married last June 5, 2008. The  groom was Leo Rosal, also a crew member from Crown Princess. The wedding was held at the Binondo Church followed by a reception at Illustrado Restaurant in Intramuros, Manila. The wedding was attended by relatives and friends and officemates of Irene  from Singa Ship.

The last to walk down the aisle is Jacqueline Ote, also from the Accounting Department who was married to Roy Gaitan, a crewmember from Queen Elizabeth 2. The Christian wedding was held last August 6, 2008 at Ibarra’s Garden in Ermita, Manila followed by a reception. Among the principal sponsors were Ms. Norma David, Executive Vice President of Singa Ship, Mr. Melvin Cruz and Ms. Gina Flores. Jacque’s friends from Singa Ship joined her in this once-in-a-lifetime event.


  NCL Visits Singa Ship Offices  

A team from NCL Cruise Lines visited the Singa office last September 25, 2008. The team was composed of Toni Gartland, Director for Fleet Personnel, Michelle Dognon-Bertino, Director for Hotel Operations and Christian Weindorf, Manager-Hotel Recruitment. They were accompanied by Kjell Hjartness, Director of C.F. Sharp Group of Companies. The purpose of their visit was to evaluate the training facilities of SHIP as a possible venue for NCL’s crew training requirements. The visit marks a reunion of sorts between NCL and Singa. It will be recalled that Singa provided NCL with Filipino hotel, deck & engine personnel for many years.

  Singa Ship Welcomes Visitors from Cunard, Seabourn and P&O Cruises  

A team from Cunard, Seabourn and P&O Cruises  visited the Singa Ship office last August 13, 2008. The Cunard team was composed of Frank Prowse, Director, Fleet Personnel for Hotel and Entertainment,  Ian Hampton, Industrial and Employee Relations Manager and Dale Law. They were joined by Francesco Garguilo, Manager-Hotel Operations of P&O. The Seabourn team, on the other hand, was composed of Kevin Spencer, General Manager-Hotel and Entertainment, Andy Rowe, Recruitment Manager and Stuart Walters, Maitre ‘D. Ms. Eileen Leong led the Singa Ship team in welcoming the guests.

The visitors were given a tour of the new Singa Ship offices and everyone was impressed with the company's facilities.  They were later treated to a hearty lunch and were given a taste of true Filipino hospitality.

  Seabourn Conducts Second Test Cooking for 2008  

Seabourn conducted its second test cooking for 2008. On hand to oversee the test cooking were Andy Rowe and Stuart Warters. They were joined by Arnold Hije, Executive Sous Chef, Elson de Asis, CDP Pastry and Oscar Nituma, CDP Butcher.  Out of the total 26 applicants who came for the test cooking, five qualified as CPD, seven as DCDP and one as CDP Baker.

  Congratulations to Agapito Veraguas Tupino for being awarded as Employee of the Month for August 2008 on board M.V. Pacific.  
  Singa Ship Helps Out-of-Job Women  

Last Sep. 9, 2008, Singa Ship Management and Aplaya Laiya Corporation in cooperation with Institute for World Evangelisation headed by Ms. Esther Fong sponsored the Balikatan Livelihood Project in Montalban Rizal. This is a one day seminar on candle making.Ms. Lilia Agulto, DTI representative, gave tips on candle making.

There were 25 attendees who attended the seminar.   This seminar was intended to help the community especially the women in order to give them the opportunity to have  additional income. According to Jitka Svozilova, Director of Institute for World Evangelisation, they have  produced 1,000 dip candle and will sell them this coming All Saints Day, Nov. 1.

They are also making  scented candles to be sold during the Christmas Season. Interested parties who want to help the Balikatan women by buying their candles can text Evelyn at 632-916-572-6915.

  Family Center Members Learn Soap Making  

The members of the Family Center gathered last August 9, 2009 for a half day workshop on liquid dishwashing soap mixing and production.  Ms. Noemi Rivera demonstrated to the attendees how to mix the ingredients in making liquid dishwashing soaps.  The finished product can be used at home or can be sold if produced in bigger quantities.  This can help the wives augment their income even by doing it leisurely.
